Gerard Jackson

Brookes News Economic Editor

Australia, according to that country's "politically correct" leadership, has long been known for its endangered species and for nearly snuffing out the aboriginal culture rooted there long before English settlers began to arrive. Gerard "Gerry" Jackson is a rare species himself - perhaps "singular" would be a better word - as Austrialia's self-described original and only "Austrian" free-market economist. "I am the only one I know of who is a member of the Austrian school of economics," Gerry says. "And for seven years I also had the pleasure of editing The New Australian (TNA), Australia's first online free market magazine." The New Australian established Gerry's reputation worldwide, thanks to the Internet. Widely read sites such as Free Republic often picked up and redistributed articles from the New Australian in the United States and elsewhere, until reorganization transformed the publication into Brookesnews.com. Gerry remains with the publication as "economics editor" and also continues his economic consulting work - which he began some 15 years ago. Like The New Australian, Brookesnews.com firmly adheres to the Austrian tradition, which puts it at odds with what Gerry calls "Australia's economics commentariat." Brookesnews.com offers timely articles focused on "events of the day" from a free-market perspective. Through Brookesnews.com and his own practice, Gerry remains committed to widening acceptance for Austrian free-market principles. "Australia's economic tradition has not included Austrian analysis," he admits. "But I would like to think our economic commentary has succeeded in providing some of our politicians and businessmen with an alternative point of view - and we expect that progress will continue. We are patient, and we see more signs of acceptance every day."
